Letters from Egypt eBook Lady Lucie Duff Gordon 18211869
These are the letters Lucie Duff Gordon send home to her family as she was dying of TB in Egypt, where she had gone for a "cure". Her observations of the life of the Egyptians and the Europeans is still applicable today. There is a tinge of sadness since she dies so very young and never sees her children or husband again. There is also a tinge of sadness because after almost 200 years, not much has changed in the ignorant and hostile our two cultures view each other through.Product details

Letters from Egypt eBook Lady Lucie Duff Gordon 18211869 Reviews
These letters by Lucy Duff Gordon provide a credible insight into life in Luxor and the surrounding area. In addition to the experiences of the writer living amid the relics of ancient Egypt, the collection of letters provides perceptive insight into the lives of people living in a rural area. The construction of the Suez Canal had an impact on the economy and the lives of Egyptians at that time. This reader has gained a broader perspective of Egypt when reading the author's descriptions of her life in Egypt.
It was an interesting book - rather slow. I read it as I am interested in Egypt. If not really interested in Egypt I would
say do not read. But it is certainly well written.
The book is comprised of letters written by a 19th Century aristocratic English woman to her family in England while she was living in Egypt. The writing is very descriptive of Egypt and the real people she encounters. The author lived in Egypt for several years trying to recover from tuberculosis and, unlike most European visitors to Egypt at that time, she made friends with local people and became a part of the community. Her letters are a window into Egyptian society of the 19th Century. The author frequently uses French and German phrases, and Arabic words in her letters without translating most of them, but this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Some of the attitudes she expresses might be off putting to contemporary sensibilities, but if you are interested in Egypt and willing to explore it through Lady Duff Gordon's eyes, I think you will enjoy this book.
Lucie Duff Gordon was an intriguing and adventurous 19th century woman who resided in Egypt for her health. She came to love the country and its people. Her accounts of the different ethnic groups and their relation to the British is interesting to say the least. I kept thinking of present day events and the changes in attitudes and power through the decades. I was so taken with this character that I read her biography!
Great on-the-ground insight into Egyptian class structure and politics from the letters of an English liberal who was nobody's fool and a great risk-taker. Lucy Duff Gordon must have been a real pistol! These letters are from the late 19th century, and from upper Egypt i.e. south on the Nile not far from its cataracts. She was slowly dying of T.B. as she wrote them but you'd scarcely know it from her grit, wry humor and total lack of self-pity.
One has to be in the mood for literature such as this. I've been interested in Egypt all of my long life so when I get in the mood, I dip into books such as this. "Letters" is obviously going to appeal to a very narrow group of readers but if you enjoy reading about Egypt before cell phones and airplanes, this might be the book for you.
This free edition of Lady Duff-Gordon's classic is actually better than some other editions of the same work for which one has to pay. It has no table of contents - that would have won it its fifth star - but is properly laid out, easy to read, and includes an introduction and a note on the author's life. It is a fascinating account of Egypt in the mid-nineteenth century, with all kinds of detail (how much one paid servants, what the interiors of Egyptian homes of the time looked like) that really bring the place and its time to life.
There is also a tinge of sadness because after almost 200 years, not much has changed in the ignorant and hostile our two cultures view each other through.
